<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I am finally getting around to expanding upon my little (only 81 pages) thesis that I wrote for my M.A. in English. It is entitled "Romantic Tragedy and the Redemptive Catharsis."</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Since I will be quoting frequently from the original work, I thought that I might provide, for those so inclined, links to the citation information for my thesis on the left-hand sidebar of this blog, right above the Twitter button. My thesis is available online through<b><u> <a href="http://dissexpress.umi.com/dxweb/search.html" target="_blank">UMI (ProQuest,)</a></u></b> and the UMI Microform Document Number is 1446341. Or, if you'd like to peruse the printed copy, you can find it in the stacks of the Mary & John Gray Library at Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas. The call number is PN1892 .A55 2006 Copy 2.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">For those readers who do not wish to consult the original document, I have provided the following summary, which should prove to be sufficient to allow the reader to easily follow discussions and possible augmentations set forth in future posts. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Essentially, my thesis proposes the following tenets:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">1. Aristotle's model of Tragedy achieves Catharsis through a process which I call <b><i>Sobering Melancholy.</i></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b><i><br /></i></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">2. Aristotle's model of Tragedy forms the fundamental core of a larger dynamic, whose permutations allow multiple and varied methodologies for the achievement of Catharsis, through the continuation of Aristotle's model past the expected point of conclusion, albeit through emotional processes other than those prescribed by Aristotle (i.e., processes other than Sobering Melancholy.)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">3. The permutation for which my thesis proposes a structural model is a type of Tragedy that I refer to as <i style="font-weight: bold;">Romantic Tragedy.</i> Other scholarly works before mine have used this term to describe elements of Aristotle's model of Tragedy which are romantic, but to my knowledge, such works still place the responsibility for Cathartic achievement within the realm of melancholy. My use of the term also describes romantic elements within Aristotle's model, but the point of deviation is this: If the playwright allows these romantic elements to form the basis of Catharsis, rather than relying upon melancholy, a different, yet equally fulfilling Catharsis becomes possible.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">4. The emotional process through which my version of Romantic Tragedy achieves Catharsis is called <b><i>Joyful Satisfaction.</i></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b><i><br /></i></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">5. In the model prescribed by Aristotle, Tragedy is composed of a beginning (a), a rise of action (b), a perepeteia or turning point (c), a decline of action (d), and lastly, a tragic fall (e).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">6. In the model proposed by my thesis, Romantic Tragedy is composed of a beginning, a rise of action, a primary perepeteia which is characterized by a grievous mistake or error in judgment, a decline of action, a secondary perepeteia which is characterized by the occurrence of one or more tragic events which are the direct result of the primary perepeteia (e), a redemptive rise of action characterized by actions of atonement (f), and lastly, a conclusion which results in Joyful Satisfaction, through the <i>partial </i>(<b><i>never</i></b> complete!) redemption of the tragic hero (g).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMEu89v162X-h7gsRfXvYpyVX05N9OPXA6fu1OhyphenhyphenOT04NzY_KZpoI_CznYB9Q3QfgEVnkYBaKOP2QPkkQtKXweqYHmUIgLHLHqaMfGqYbZFy4cPyZgrtF5duG_ehGrROirqtOAmcvj3ua8/s1600/Thesis+Figures+001.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMEu89v162X-h7gsRfXvYpyVX05N9OPXA6fu1OhyphenhyphenOT04NzY_KZpoI_CznYB9Q3QfgEVnkYBaKOP2QPkkQtKXweqYHmUIgLHLHqaMfGqYbZFy4cPyZgrtF5duG_ehGrROirqtOAmcvj3ua8/s400/Thesis+Figures+001.bmp" height="200" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">7. Romantic Tragedy is not Comedy, because it does not reverse nor prevent the fall of the tragic hero; the grievous error of the primary perepeteia and the tragic event(s) of the secondary perepeteia still carry their full weight and consequence, but instead of a complete fall, the nobility of the tragic hero allows him to perform some action of atonement, which results in his partial redemption.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">8. The most common genre for the occurrence of Romantic Tragedy among modern dramatic forms is that of the American "Western" film.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The definition that my thesis uses as its "official" definition of Tragedy is a combination of two translations. The translations used are those of S.H. Butcher, and Malcolm Heath. The result is the following "hybrid" definition:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><i>Tragedy is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and possesses magnitude; in language made pleasurable, each of its species separated into different parts [of the play]; performed by actors, not through narration; effecting through [the experiencing of] pity and fear the proper purification of these emotions.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">In the posts that follow this one, I will be consulting other scholarly resources on both Tragedy and Romanticism. I will also be applying my methodology to various films, showing the Tragic structure and Cathartic process as it unfolds in each film.</span></div>

Edits are highlighted in yellow. It was originally posted on 8-21-2011. The edits that I have made represent a renewed interest in reviving this blog, which has been sitting in cyberspace virtually untouched for almost 17 months.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This blog has been languishing in the throes of neglect long enough. I have been putting off posting, because I knew in my mind that the next post was going to bring with it a significant change in the blog's purpose and scope.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Originally, the scope of this blog was limited to<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;"> being "...an attempt to document some of my best acquisitions, as well as to provide myself with a forum through which to showcase my other book and writing related interests."</span></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;"><b><i>By the terms "best acquisitions," I originally meant new additions to my "Big Three" collection (i.e., antiquarian editions of the works of John Dryden, Alexander Pope, and Jonathan Swift.)</i></b></span></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;">By the terms "other book and writing related interests," I meant published, scholarly criticism relating to the Big Three, as well as my own scholarly work in this area, and also the expansion of my thesis, which centers around Aristotelian tragic theory, and its possible permutations.</span></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;">This might, at first, seem like a broad enough range of topics for a blog, but I soon realized that if I wanted a large readership, that my focus was still much too narrow. Therefore, I decided to expand the blog's scope to include my collections of the following authors:</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;"></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The works of William Congreve</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The works of John Milton</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The works of Thomas Shadwell</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The works of William Wotton</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The works of Sir William Temple</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">As well as antiquarian books on the following subjects:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Antique locomotives</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Wooden sailing ships</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Medieval arms and armor</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Heraldry</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: yellow; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Grandfather Clocks</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">But even then, I sensed the need to broaden the scope of this blog even further. In addition to broadening the scope, I also felt that the content up until this point has been somewhat lacking in depth; in essence, each post has gone something like this: </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">"I recently bought another book about the Big Three. It had these so and so markings on the inside, and was published in so and so year. Here are some pictures..."</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">If I were to continue in this vein, I might as well call this blog "Christopher's Brag Book," and be done with it. But the shallow content shall end here, because the last thing that I wish to do is to allow this blog to become my online vanity fest.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I <i>do</i> want to showcase my book collection, but I want to provide my reader with something of interest as well. I want my reader to know why I collect these things, and what makes each volume special to me. I want my reader to learn something new that will be of value to them. I want my reader to come away from each post thinking, "Wow, I didn't know that. That's pretty neat." I want the blog to be informative, like a museum exhibit. It's nice to look at the big, skeletal T-Rex, but there needs to be a plaque as well, that lets the viewer know what it is that they're looking at, and why it is significant and worth remembering.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Thus, I have decided to write this post, which will serve as a re-dedication of the blog, and a more concise re-statement of its aim and purpose.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I am Christopher Altnau, aka The Traveling Antiquarian, and I am a librarian, a literary scholar, a book collector (antiquarian and otherwise,) a writer, and an amateur genealogist.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">In this blog, you will find:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">1) Articles relating to my collection of antiquarian books, specifically the works of the aforementioned authors and subjects.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">2) Articles relating to my scholarly endeavors, including the expansion of my thesis, and literary criticism relating to the Big Three.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">3) Articles relating to librarianship, including such topics as information literacy, digital preservation, rare books and manuscripts, and equal access to special collections.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">4) Articles on book binding, book repair, book appraisal, and book restoration.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: yellow; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">5) Articles and photographs concerning both antique, and<i> modern-replicas-in-the-antique-style</i>, grandfather clocks. (I love all kinds of ornate / old fashioned clocks, from pocket watches to wall clocks, but grandfather clocks are my favorite.)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">6) Anything else that I can think of that would somehow relate to the overall intent of this blog,<span style="background-color: yellow;"> including a new post category: <b><i>Wish List</i></b>.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The posts will probably be spaced further apart, but they will no longer be rushed, and they will no longer focus solely upon the physical act of collecting. I'd rather have five quality posts per year than to have 20 mediocre ones. And I hope that you, my reader, will agree.</span><br />

How often does one get the chance to use a title like that?</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I went to the Austin BP&P Show this afternoon, arriving in the last hour of the last day of the show, just in time, it seems, to stumble upon a really good deal. I'd like to thank Chuck Whiting for telling me about it, because I was otherwise oblivious to the occurrence this event, and hindsight being all that they say it is, I would have regretted not attending.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I don't usually collect Sir Walter Scott's works, but the book was so beautiful, I was unable to ignore it. The seller was, surprisingly, the Austin Public Library Bookstore. Their blog,</span> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Recycled Reads</span>, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">can be found <a href="http://recycledreadsaustin.wordpress.com/">here.</a></span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Before today, I hadn't realized that the APL even had a bookstore, let alone one that boasted rare and antiquarian titles among its inventory; I would have thought that the library would have put such books in its special collections room, but it appears that I was blessedly mistaken. I think that I shall be paying them a visit quite soon. Their prices were quite reasonable.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">And of course, all the monies collected by the store benefits the APL, a noble cause to be sure.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Without further ado, here are the pictures of my new treasure:</span><br />

I apologize for my long absence, but November and December were incredibly hectic for me. The upside is that, on December 17, 2010, I graduated from library school. Thus, my day to day schedule is now a lot more flexible, which means that I can once again turn some of my attention to leisurely pursuits such as this blog.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This post concerns a windfall, upon which I stumbled completely by chance. I was at the local used book store, looking for books on genealogy, and I just happened to see this book on the clearance rack for one dollar, on my way out of the store. Granted, the spine is in grievous need of repair, and the book is a "student edition," which means that it was meant as a textbook, probably as an introductory text for high school or freshman college students. But to me, it is a treasure. As you will see from the pictures, it was published in 1881, with an introduction by Matthew Arnold, and has an inscription from 1884; and of course, its subject matter is close to my heart. I really enjoyed discovering this little jewel, just as I am also enjoying the process of adding it to this blog. So without further ado, here are the pictures:</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Here is the URL to Mr. Atha's website: (<a href="http://www.rarebookrestoration.com/">http://www.rarebookrestoration.com/</a>)</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I have to say, now that I am holding the book in my hand, I couldn't be happier; Michael's high quality work far exceeded my expectations, and I feel like a kid at Christmastime. Owning this unique volume is truly both a pleasure and a privilege.</span><br />

The frontispiece is, alas, missing entirely, as are the remaining pages of the epilogue beyond the first. At any rate, it's still a nice piece to have; the remaining pages are crisp and tight, and only slightly yellowed with age. For something that's 1 year younger than the United States, it's in remarkable shape. Here are some pictures, including one next to a tape dispenser, to illustrate the small size of the item. It was probably a "coat pocket" edition, meant to be easily portable.</span><br />

</span></div>The Traveling Antiquarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773426778748818294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5467156359160423961.post-61330707656472503922010-09-19T12:26:00.005-05:002011-08-21T16:28:26.505-05:00More Ephemera?<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Ok, I was going to wait for the aforementioned volume to arrive in the mail before posting this, but I am afraid that in the interest of keeping this blog active, I cannot afford to wait on the mail any longer. The volume has been in the mail for 10 days, according to the tracking page, and has not, as yet, arrived! Now I know where the term "snail mail" comes from. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I do, however, admit to having had better service in the past, and to being mystified as to why this particular parcel has spent so long in the mail system. Maybe (hopefully!) it's just a fluke. I eagerly await tomorrow's mail, in hopes that the slow-moving volume shall appear; according to the tracking page, it left the nearby sorting facility on the 14th, and according to one of the sorting facility's personnel (whom I called the other day) it has two days to make it from the sorting facility to my local branch, and my local branch has another two days past that to deliver it. That means that it should have been delivered on the 18th (yesterday.) I shall give them a 1 day margin (tomorrow's mail) before resorting to more direct inquiry methods (i.e., a trip down to the sorting facility.)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">At any rate, I was going to include this item in the post containing the mailed volume, but it now seems that it shall appear in a post of its own, so let's get to it, shall we?</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I am not sure whether or not this item counts as ephemera, or as part of the book that it came with (in the same manner as a dust jacket... would a dust jacket count as ephemera?) It is a newsletter that came with my 1950 edition of Plutarch's Lives. The book's introduction is by Carl Van Doren, whose brother, Mark, wrote what is still recognized as the definitive scholarly treatment of Dryden's poetry. Here is a picture of the newsletter, unfolded. (It is printed double-sided on a single sheet, folded in the middle, designed to be read as a four page pamphlet.)</span><br />

If any of my gentle readers can contradict me in this regard, please feel free to drop me an email, I would love to know about it.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />

It's a limited edition Harvard Classics No. 12 from 1909: Plutarch's Lives. It's the Dryden Translation, corrected and revised by Arthur H. Clough. Here are some pictures of it:</span><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I know that I promised you guys the really old piece, and it's on its way, according the USPS tracking info, but it seems that it is taking its sweet time getting here. But when it arrives, rest assured, it will make a delightful post (actually, two posts. I will explain this at a later time.)</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I was also going through my collection, and I remembered that I actually own a second piece of ephemera; one of my "new" books (the 1950 Carl Van Doren edition of Dryden's translation of Plutarch) has an interesting little leaflet in it. I will include the leaflet in the upcoming post with the old piece. I think I might try to expand the scope of this blog to include more (occasional) ephemera, as I am starting to get the "bug" for collecting it.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Until next time, I wish you all (my theoretically immense mob consisting of thousands of readers---a guy can dream, can't he?) the best of luck in your book collecting endeavors!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

One of the things that I have done recently (with more than a little help from the missus) was to create a banner for the blog. It took a lot of experimenting and tweaking, but I am really pleased with the end result.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">There is more new content on the way, I assure you. I recently purchased another old piece from an online bookseller, and I am waiting for it to arrive in the mail. When it does (perhaps even today? I hope so!) I shall make it the subject of the next post. So stay tuned!</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Until then, I wish you the best of luck in your book collecting endeavors!</div>The Traveling Antiquarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773426778748818294noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5467156359160423961.post-17290160508497294352010-08-31T13:57:00.000-05:002010-08-31T13:57:51.620-05:00Expansion of Interests<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Recently, I decided to expand my collection activities to include a wider range of interests; although the focus of my collection will still center around Dryden, Pope and Swift, I will now be adding the following topics to the list of things that I collect:</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The works of William Congreve</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The works of John Milton</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The works of Thomas Shadwell</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The works of William Wotton</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The works of Sir William Temple</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As well as books on the following subjects:</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Antique locomotives</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Wooden sailing ships</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Medieval arms and armor</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Heraldry</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This list might grow as time goes by, and is by no means complete. I am doing this for two main reasons:</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">1) I would like to build, for my personal edification, a library of antiquarian books; building a library devoted only to three authors is possible, but not particularly feasible. My "Big Three" collection will hold a place of honor within my future library, but I cannot foresee such a narrow field of specialty becoming a large-enough collection to comprise an entire library.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">2) I want to expand the readership of this blog as well, and as it stands, its appeal is limited to those who, like me, have an interest in the three aforementioned authors.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Also, in the coming weeks, I also plan to post a few scholarly notes on the "Big Three," and perhaps a post or two devoted to the expansion of my master's thesis as well.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">For now, I will leave you with a piece that I acquired back in January of this year: a 1909 edition of the Harvard Classics, on the works of John Milton:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />

However, this latest post is now ready for publishing, and I suspect that you might enjoy it.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">In my quest to become a more rounded collector, I recently purchased a copy of William Rees-Mogg's "How To Buy Rare Books: A Practical Guide To The Antiquarian Book Market." (Second Impression: 1988.)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I am always looking for materials than can expand my knowledge; although I know a good little bit about book collecting, I know far less than the average professional antiquarian bookseller, which places me firmly within the amateur category when it comes to my chosen pastime. As time goes by, I hope to change that.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Although the book is somewhat out-of-date (it's pre-internet, after all) it is still proving to be quite enjoyable. I will post more about the content of this book after I have finished reading it. In the meantime, here is a picture of it:</span><br />

Thus, the first volume is likely to have been published either at the same time, or perhaps one or two years prior. Since I prefer to err on the side of caution, I am assuming a publication date of 1822 for the first volume as well.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The next piece is my Crowell edition of Pope's Poems, which has no publication date, as you can tell from its title page. However, since T.Y. Crowell died in 1909, the publication date must be prior to that year; volumes published by his company after his death bear the name of his son, T.I. Crowell, who succeeded him as president of the company.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What I really love about this book is its small size; it looks like it would fit in the average coat pocket, thus making it extremely portable. And of course, you have to love the inscriptions, which indicate that the book was passed down at least twice within the same family; first, to Sarah Gibbes by her mother, then to Adelaide(?) Gibbes Elliott by her grandmother (Sarah.) I have always wondered about the lives of people in inscriptions like this; from the tone of the inscription, this book was a special gift, probably to someone who was either a fan of Pope's poetry, or of English poetry in general. I can picture Adelaide, sitting on her front porch on a pleasantly sunny day, reading from this little book, perhaps while her children play in the yard, or while her husband sits opposite her, with a book of his own, pausing occasionally to comment on some matter. Some collectors do not value inscriptions, but I think that inscriptions make a book not only unique, but alive. When you find an inscription like this, you know that this book was someone's treasured keepsake, and it gives you a sense of connectedness, in that you are carrying on their legacy by ensuring the book's continued preservation.</span><br />

Two of the four turned out to be from the 1880's. Of the two that were dated in the 1900's, only one was before 1910, the other was dated 1914.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">At any rate, here are the two pieces:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">THE POETICAL WORKS OF JOHN DRYDEN, CAMBRIDGE EDITION, 1909:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicvWgR-szJ2ghH31BRCjLHWHo982D3vTvd0vFY1rJ2JXhfhWBCkDMTXI3A6kMSFlOayVyAarkmSyETw1dUfXfdjxe4J9S_qH_GiO09aEG8xh0DFBD8GOneXYw54urNQyLC3PcTgOO8kHl8/s1600/Houghton-Mifflin-Dryden-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicvWgR-szJ2ghH31BRCjLHWHo982D3vTvd0vFY1rJ2JXhfhWBCkDMTXI3A6kMSFlOayVyAarkmSyETw1dUfXfdjxe4J9S_qH_GiO09aEG8xh0DFBD8GOneXYw54urNQyLC3PcTgOO8kHl8/s640/Houghton-Mifflin-Dryden-01.jpg" width="440" /></a></div><br />

<br />
ENGLISH DRAMA OF THE RESTORATION AND EIGHTEENTH CENTURY (1642-1780), 1914:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs3qBII-gCk6Ide9fSJPWjHTg0OSouTq8q45XjFxcaPmhaRdUReXdI9cr6OwRQH5X7IlCWccrpVcFOJtsSvbsZo9CwLI_cYxkCFwzKQTej3AFUc5sq7yDpd8PPB_5JQYcdXESJTQka95Vc/s1600/English-Drama-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs3qBII-gCk6Ide9fSJPWjHTg0OSouTq8q45XjFxcaPmhaRdUReXdI9cr6OwRQH5X7IlCWccrpVcFOJtsSvbsZo9CwLI_cYxkCFwzKQTej3AFUc5sq7yDpd8PPB_5JQYcdXESJTQka95Vc/s640/English-Drama-01.jpg" width="152" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Since the second piece covers The Restoration in general, materials on Dryden are but one aspect of the book; in addition, as a sort of bonus, there are materials on Shadwell and Congreve as well. (Shadwell was a rival of Dryden's, and Congreve's writing was heavily influenced by Dryden; in addition, Congreve was a good friend of Dryden's cousin, Jonathan Swift.) Thus, this book is especially useful to me.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Both books are in excellent and usable condition, having obviously been well-cared-for by their previous owners.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">It is always interesting to read old textbooks, which is what both of these pieces are. Literary criticism goes through life cycles and is greatly affected by the prevailing schools of thought of the particular era in which it is written, thus it is often helpful, in the quest to gain insight into modern critical modalities, to examine the critical modalities of ages past.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Until the next post, I wish you well.</span><br />

Let's start with the Dryden:</span><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUWuu7289OWqRPSVAu2pQjQmz2_HdbF6d4HB8SgXh2EI9QAqwDhcg2ijg_5GuyhZD24q4KMeg_usxCYEQK923s_I71tCAUfWJstv-w-6RILk1Zpnolx-rhVzQCU8QmunP1ujPFmCvym8dz/s1600/Dryden+Inscription+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUWuu7289OWqRPSVAu2pQjQmz2_HdbF6d4HB8SgXh2EI9QAqwDhcg2ijg_5GuyhZD24q4KMeg_usxCYEQK923s_I71tCAUfWJstv-w-6RILk1Zpnolx-rhVzQCU8QmunP1ujPFmCvym8dz/s640/Dryden+Inscription+001.jpg" width="457" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photo: © Magdalena Altnau</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">In the front of this book is a wonderful inscription, shown above. Below, you can see from the title page that the book was published in 1862:</span><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photo: © Magdalena Altnau</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The Pope edition, whose title page appears below, is from the same publisher, published one year later, in 1863:</span><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZdaVnY5Hmu3tBJ5lPUebpOqq_Y64UzR1aygpvpzAYlrnym3BYKpIFDC8GSsFMaheFgKqhPfH45BBArX6St8N_vgegkTEAGk6hOK_azHIptZ8gHCFMedRcWleF05vLvyvt2gl3g1Lgo6qi/s1600/Poetical+Works+Pope.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZdaVnY5Hmu3tBJ5lPUebpOqq_Y64UzR1aygpvpzAYlrnym3BYKpIFDC8GSsFMaheFgKqhPfH45BBArX6St8N_vgegkTEAGk6hOK_azHIptZ8gHCFMedRcWleF05vLvyvt2gl3g1Lgo6qi/s640/Poetical+Works+Pope.jpg" width="408" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photo: © Magdalena Altnau</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What I really like about these two editions is that they are secular works which have been edited by clergymen, which today is not as commonplace a practice as it once was.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The Swift book is a bit of an oddity; you can tell that it's old, because of the way it's printed; the typeface leaves indentations on the page, which means that each page was produced by an actual metal-plate press. However, there is no publication data on the title page, aside from who produced it. It simply says:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">PROSE WRITINGS OF SWIFT.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">CHOSEN AND ARRANGED BY WALTER LEWIN.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">LONDON: WALTER SCOTT, LTD.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">24 WARWICK LANE.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">However, as you can see from the picture below, Mr. Lewin signs his introductory notice as having been written in 1886.</span><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbrdQ9C9D11-VZNJIIf64GdzNm9xZErqyknFliIlAiVrzlwodTseF-nNVUYxRZOe9I-o6bvqb6sszqqnGAeaZHBbKf7jsBlnaNyK-j63hukbCnAbCkGVta-iL0I3nE2Cc8scW_vLrrPfET/s1600/Prose+Swift.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbrdQ9C9D11-VZNJIIf64GdzNm9xZErqyknFliIlAiVrzlwodTseF-nNVUYxRZOe9I-o6bvqb6sszqqnGAeaZHBbKf7jsBlnaNyK-j63hukbCnAbCkGVta-iL0I3nE2Cc8scW_vLrrPfET/s640/Prose+Swift.jpg" width="428" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photo: © Magdalena Altnau</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Since introductions are usually written immediately prior to publication (it's the last thing that is written, since it is intended to be a summary of the editor's thoughts and feelings about the process of bringing the book to fruition) I would venture a guess that this book was published either in 1886 or perhaps the first part of 1887.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">In this picture you can also see the indentations that I was referring to. Simply wonderful; I love the subtle differences (for example, the tactile aspects mentioned here) between books such as this, from a bygone era, and modern-day books.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Lastly, as a surprise bonus, we have the title page from the aforementioned "Tonson Edition," the crown jewel of my collection:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZaSkIbxutpAbXGT0fA5F45OF6kkfW1bbr1cgw8v3bVGjsyFk6Tm-hFbsVNxDxID7Z4BvWzVatneqDAJhUnAAIZrg_PTNRg9K09yfAqC9l7uKaNOSlwaWKdOK4OfwGUvLBy0pt-ryZ_7Ua/s1600/Works+Dryden+1735.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZaSkIbxutpAbXGT0fA5F45OF6kkfW1bbr1cgw8v3bVGjsyFk6Tm-hFbsVNxDxID7Z4BvWzVatneqDAJhUnAAIZrg_PTNRg9K09yfAqC9l7uKaNOSlwaWKdOK4OfwGUvLBy0pt-ryZ_7Ua/s640/Works+Dryden+1735.jpg" width="370" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photo: © Magdalena Altnau</td></tr>
</tbody></table><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The former owner was probably proud to own this volume, since he went through the trouble of writing his name in the upper right corner. From the way it's written, I would guess that the inscription is 19th century in origin, but I could be wrong. The pencil inscription at the bottom right, "1735," is probably a notation by a bookseller who possessed the book somewhere along the way.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Well, there you have it, a look at four of my favorite pieces. In my next post, I will showcase a few of my early (pre-1910) twentieth century editions. Until then, I wish you prosperity in your own book collection endeavors!</span>The Traveling Antiquarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773426778748818294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5467156359160423961.post-54254683927718024842010-08-14T00:40:00.000-05:002010-08-14T00:40:12.167-05:00Coming Soon<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Here's a sneak peak at three of my favorite acquisitions. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHSWz8nh7DtdCac79B20yAzpjzZumjVgdTGNqPqWGUSU5Z-w9ij5DJn_CMpaKHvuH4JlqwYitxUhHOSMBjq5itNUn5WsfGPKiXE9AuMyTNBZzfi6nE2uQDjUlq72uZbCew23Z4nsJxjYGe/s1600/Dryden-Bib-001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHSWz8nh7DtdCac79B20yAzpjzZumjVgdTGNqPqWGUSU5Z-w9ij5DJn_CMpaKHvuH4JlqwYitxUhHOSMBjq5itNUn5WsfGPKiXE9AuMyTNBZzfi6nE2uQDjUlq72uZbCew23Z4nsJxjYGe/s640/Dryden-Bib-001.jpg" width="395" /></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;">The dust jacket of my copy is torn at the top, but this is its greatest defect; the book itself is in excellent condition. I used it to authenticate my 1735 Tonson edition, which appears as entry 109.c on page 152. I hope to make use of it again soon; meaning of course, as soon as I can procure another copy of Dryden's works published before 1760, which is the latest date covered by this fine bibliography. To date, the 1735 Tonson edition is the only volume in my collection which falls under its (the bibliography's) purview, my other editions dating to the early and mid-1800's.</span><br />

This is one of those times.</span><br />
<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6UYgOdWnatin9MTsdg_GnGjrGuqnYqPtjqyoH7Y9m2LZTJYGTiGNeqn-ZPS1uvdOHFAIr4a-Oy9ECDBM9cshR66c2kBMRD6HWJa-PVV2SIrNfiERK3DWAQU5ZMM7PmDGlrwYgCkPphOw4/s1600/Dryden-Cover-003.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6UYgOdWnatin9MTsdg_GnGjrGuqnYqPtjqyoH7Y9m2LZTJYGTiGNeqn-ZPS1uvdOHFAIr4a-Oy9ECDBM9cshR66c2kBMRD6HWJa-PVV2SIrNfiERK3DWAQU5ZMM7PmDGlrwYgCkPphOw4/s320/Dryden-Cover-003.bmp" /></span></a></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;">I got this book last week for my birthday, and I can't wait to read it. (I have already perused the overall contents, but books such as this require a great deal of time and contemplation in order to thoroughly absorb.)</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;">The scholarship in this book looks quite promising; in particular, I have noticed that one of the contributors is the esteemed James A. Winn, a renowned Dryden scholar. The book is published by the University of Toronto Press, in association with the UCLA Center for Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century Studies and the William Anderson Clark Memorial Library. It is copyright 2004, and is edited by Jane Lewis and Maximillian E. Novak. This looks to be a first edition, which is not surprising, considering that this book is not "mainstream," even where literary scholarship is concerned; it represents a field of specialized interest, therefore, revisions are likely to be few and far-between. Nevertheless, for a Dryden enthusiast like me, this book is truly a treasure.</span></div><div><br />

I collect books of all genres and eras; my mania in this regard is quite extensive.</span></span></span><br />
<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;"><br />
</span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;">Thus, while this blog (as its title suggests) is about my antiquarian endeavors, you can expect to see (from time to time) a variety of other books as well, which for one reason or another, I have seen fit to acquire.</span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;"><br />
</span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;">In the area of antiquarian titles, I concentrate my collection activities mainly upon three important authors: John Dryden, Alexander Pope, and Jonathan Swift. I affectionately refer to them in the same manner as was the habit of an old college professor of mine: "The Big Three."</span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;"><br />
</span></span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_idO-Dc44KA5i8dQ6BT07r1lq3KQ_Dk9NqNmCxi_e_QR89veid3be2oOxOXwRZR50aB5qRoTJ4tKWcH8YK-5wcsZ-qZsNDXSCBLS3uB7o5-wFpdxQ5jxE8RrD-SKWVRfH-j5n2upuh_xM/s1600/Big-Three-Resize-01.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_idO-Dc44KA5i8dQ6BT07r1lq3KQ_Dk9NqNmCxi_e_QR89veid3be2oOxOXwRZR50aB5qRoTJ4tKWcH8YK-5wcsZ-qZsNDXSCBLS3uB7o5-wFpdxQ5jxE8RrD-SKWVRfH-j5n2upuh_xM/s320/Big-Three-Resize-01.bmp" /></a></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">These authors were the most influential of their day; from the Restoration, until the mid 18th century, these three authors dominated English literature, and set the standard for others to follow.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">I collect any major work associated with these authors, including contemporary scholarship anthologies. But the bulk of my Big Three collection is antiquarian in nature.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">I have a couple of hard and fast rules that I follow in determining what is and what isn't antiquarian; they are as follows:</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">1) I consider anything written in or prior to the year 1940 to be an "antique," i.e., in order for me to consider a book to be "old," it must have been around for at least 70 years or more.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">2) I consider anything written in or prior to the year 1910 to be "antiquarian," i.e., in order for a book to earn a place on my antiquarian shelf, it must have been around for at least 100 years or more.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">Having said that, the age of a given book is not always the most important factor in my decision to acquire it; it merely determines the shelf upon which the acquired item will reside.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">For example, I value my copy of "John Dryden and His World" by James A. Winn (1987) just as much as my 1735 edition of Dryden's works published for Jacob Tonson. The only difference between them, insofar as their value to me, is that Winn's book sits in my general collection, while the Tonson edition resides on the antiquarian shelf.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">I also collect other antiquarian titles, including editions of John Milton, who besides being one of the giants of English literature in his own right, was also a major influence on the young John Dryden.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">But my main focus remains upon The Big Three, and always shall. There is something magical about them, especially Dryden, that drives me to collect everything that I possibly can pertaining to them. Thus, this blog was born; a chronicle of my quest to expand my Big Three collection to as large a proportion as I am able. I hope you will enjoy tagging along with me on this journey.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
